“ Perched on a high hill…..the strongest and most ancient in Tuscany” is how a 13th century poet, Fazio degli Uberti, described Volterra, the city of Alabaster, renowned for its historical heritage. Alabaster stone , an inherent feature of Volterra since the Etruscan era, has generated a vestige of art and manual dexterity which pursues its course in the dusty white workshops where traditional skill and creative innovation abound. Arte in Bottega resolves to safe guard, re-evaluate and promote the great variety of artistic age-old crafts that thrive in this ancient hilltop town. The aim is to review and highlight the traditional working techniques and explore and exploit what new technology has to offer. Those who have adhered to Arte in Bottega are not only skilful artisans but are also willing to impart their knowledge.
